Volunteer Programme

In Nepali culture, philanthropy for religious purposes or for building of physical structures is common. However, there is no culture of giving for something as abstract as women’s empowerment.

From its inception, Tewa has aimed to change this and since 1997 Tewa has trained a cadre of dedicated volunteers to engage in local fund raising and to disseminate Tewa’s philosophy.
As a part of Tewa`s on-going efforts in human resource development, volunteers are trained during a three day workshop facilitated by Tewa team and mentored for a further three months period. The training is an opportunity to share Tewa`s aim and philosophy, simulataneously expanding the participants` knowledge on the development and social issues, as well as teaching fund raising skills.

The success of this programme shows that local fund raising is possible in a developing country! In addition, this type of fund raising, done on a very personal level, helps build communities and makes philanthropy more relevant to present times and needs.

Annual awards for the volunteers are instituted to recognize the volunteers and make their work visible.

Quick Facts (1997- May 2006):
Total Number of Volunteers Trained: 343
Total Amount Raised (during mentoring period): Rs 1,120,407 (approx US$ 15,780)
Record Amount raised by one batch of volunteers: Rs 166,082 (approx US$ 2,339)(batch #1 of 2001)
