Tewa Model AdaptionInitiative (TMAI)
After the Tewa’s Organizational Development Audit in 2008, Tewa Board decided to initiate a new programme and the programme was named Tewa Model Adaptation Initiative (TMAI). The programme was designed to impart knowledge, skill and motivation to other women organization to get involve in community philanthropy for women's empowerment.
First a Working committee was formed consisting of the Board and staff. This committee identified a potential working district that was based on certain criteria. On the basis of the crateria, Pokhara in Kaski district was chosen to start the TMAI. The basic criteria to select Pokhara was because it is easily accessable in terms of travel, communication, and has a good prospect for local fundraising.
Objectives:
The objectives of this programme are:
| 1 | To enable other women organizations to learn from Tewa's experiences about local fundraising based on modern philanthropic giving for women's empowerment through grant making. |
| 2 | To build a critical mass of women and men who are committed to and propagate modern philanthropy with a belief in the philosophy of self-reliant development and equitable justice. |
What is TMAI ?
| 1 | Tewa will share fourteen years of its working experiences in modern philanthropy for women's empowerment to others organizations. |
| 2 | Organisations involved in this initiative will be trained by Tewa to build their capacity in local fundraising, volunteers development and grant making. |
| 3 | This initiative will not be done in project oriented approach rather it will be a transfer of skills; for sustainable practice in local communities for self-reliant development. |
| 4 |
Except for one-time matching fund against their local fundraised amount, these organizations will not receive funds from Tewa to implement the activities they choose. |
A brief progess report:
| 1 | After an explortory visit to Pokhara by TMAI Team, we had interactions with several local women organizations, corporate and government bodies to share the objectives of the initiative. |
| 2 | After the interactions, a 1 day workshop was organized with different organizations and individuals from NGOs, Government bodies, Corporate offices to share and get their feed-back about the programme. |
| 3 | Based upon the criteria and the interests, five organizations were selected as TMAI District Organizations (D Os) and they were: |
| 4 | 1. Sahakarya Nepal 2. Child and Women Empowerment Society 3. Dalit Mahila Sangh (FEDO) 4. Nari Sewa Kendra, and 5. Manakamana Sahakari Mahila Bachat tatha Rin Samuha |
After the identification of the district organizations one day planning workshop was organized with the D Os. In this workshop each organization prepared their 3 years work plan in which they had set these targets:
| 1 | Train and mobilize 200 volunteers and minimum of 75% trained volunteers would be mobilized |
| 2 | In three years Rs. 10,00,000. 00 (Ten Lakhs Rupees) would be raised locally for grants |
| 3 | Grants to 40 women groups will be given to other women groups of the area for various empowering activities |
Based on the work plan and the target the first capacity building training was organized. In June 2009, a fundraising volunteer training was organized. 22 volunteers from all five D Os took part in this training.
After the volunteers training, Tewa has been in regular contact with the D Os both by travelling to Pokhara by Tewa team and other form of communications. It has been observed that all D Os and their volunteers have organized fundraising events and are actively engaged in fundraising. And the volunteers during their have successfully raised about Rs. 200,000.00
The forthcoming activities:
Now all 5 District Organizations are working according to their work plans which are updated quarterly. Now after their fund raising event and the volunteer’s graduation the D Os had one day workshop with Tewa about grant making and are now in the process to formulate grantmaking criteria and after that they will then disburse their first grants thereby completing one cycle of the TMAI.
After completion of first cycle of TMAI Tewa will continue to interact and work with these D Os and will make assessment to document the learning experiences.
Tewa is thankful to Filia die Frauenstistung, sister fund from Germany whose grant support for this programme made it possible to start this programme.
